Genomics is a rapidly expanding field, with new research and applications branching into nearly every clinical specialty. Our Genomic Medicine in Clinical Practice course aims to equip healthcare professionals, researchers, and medical students who are interested in learning more about the current and future applications of genomic medicine. Our esteemed faculty of clinical and molecular geneticists, genetic counselors, and subspecialists will lead participants through instructional videos, practical exercises, and assessments.
This offering is comprised of five modules, which can be taken individually, or altogether as a complete offering.
Foundational Components
This module will present a big-picture view of recent advances in genomic medicine and will introduce skills conducting family history collection and pedigree interpretation.
Genomic Variation and Laboratory Analysis
This module will explore genomic variations, related phenotypic expressions, and the testing technologies designed to detect these variations; as well as introducing skills and considerations in evaluating a laboratory analysis.
Clinical Genetic Testing
This module will introduce a basic genetic counseling workflow for returning results and examine common applications of genetic testing in clinical care.
Preventative Genomic Screening
This module will describe advances in patient care made available through population screening in light of an ever-expanding genetic testing infrastructure and explore emerging applications of preventive genomic screening.
Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues
This module will navigate laws, policies, and ethical principles that are shaping the landscape of genomic medicine as well as examining the historical and contemporary social issues impacting the delivery of genomic medical care today.
